If you want to get a bit away from the dike, you should take this alternative route through the small village of Moorwerder. There you can "look over the shoulder" of the vegetable growers and enjoy an unknown part of Hamburg.
On the last part of the route you can still choose whether to drive on the road or up on the dike. The stretch of the dyke is partly single trail and mostly not paved.
