Erected by order of Felipe II, the Royal Palace of Aranjuez was the summer residence of the Spanish Monarchy.
Felipe II entrusted the project to the architect Juan Bautista de Toledo, who died during its construction, so his disciple Juan de Herrera was in charge of finishing off the work. Throughout the 17th century the work was stopped, until in the time of Ferdinand VI an important extension was undertaken, which Carlos III will continue by equipping it with wings that enclose the parade ground, as can be seen today. A smaller palace, the so-called Casa del Labrador, is located outside the enclosure, forming part of the Jardín del Príncipe.

The immense gardens, designed to exalt the royal residence on the arid and dry plateau in the center of the Iberian Peninsula, and irrigated with the waters of the Tagus and Jarama rivers, are the most important of the Habsburg period. They achieved singular renown thanks to the Concierto de Aranjuez, by Joaquín Rodrigo, considered the most listened to Spanish musical composition in the world. In 2001 this environment was declared a "World Heritage Cultural Landscape" by UNESCO.

Of the palace, the Chinese Room, the Porcelain Cabinet and the Hall of Mirrors stand out.
