The oldest great invention in Germany
It was found in 1999 in dredging work to the deepening of the Elbe at Övelgönne in about 15m depth. The first recovery attempt with a floating crane was only based on a weight of 140 tons. But it was 217 tons. The stone broke free and sank again in the Elbe. Only at the second attempt, the granite block from the floating crane was first placed on a pontoon and then to its present location on the banks of the Elbe.
With a 19.7 m circumference, a width of up to 7.9 m and a height of about 4.5 m, it is already considerably large, but not the largest in Germany. But the oldest big, because he comes from the Elster Ice Age and not like many younger from the Saale or Vistula Ice Age.
The old Swede comes from Ostsmåland in Sweden. He is officially baptized and naturalized and thus probably the oldest immigrant in Germany.
He is often smeared with graffiti - he really did not deserve that.
