The first fortress in Funchal was built between 1529 and 1540. It was only at the request of the population, after a boat anchored in the port of Funchal was attacked by pirates, that construction of a fortress began. Until the middle of the 16th century, however, only one building was built, which proved to be quite inadequate for the required defensive purposes and which then promptly fell victim to the attacks of the French pirates in 1566. In the years that followed, the Fortaleza was rebuilt, further fortified and enlarged in several construction phases that extended into the 19th century, so that the Palácio de São Lourenço is now one of the best-preserved examples of Portuguese fortifications from the 16th and 17th centuries counts.
