The church was probably built in brick in Romanesque style around the year 1200. Since Schnackenburg was primarily home to boatmen and merchants, the church was consecrated to Saint Nicholas during the devastating city fires in Schnackenburg, which occurred in 1624, 1635, 1674 and In 1728, the church was probably spared due to its massive stone construction. The tower hood was renewed in 1750, as indicated by a plaque above the tower entrance. In 1777, the so-called bridal entrance was added to the nave in the south after two older porches had been demolished there and under the tower. At the end of the 18th century, the church windows were adapted to contemporary tastes. Extensive renovation work was carried out on the church building in 2016 and 2017.
