The characteristic village developed from the 14th century around the ancient fortified garrison of the Medici tower. The tower is presumed to have existed since the Norman age, isolated on a hilltop, and communicating with the towers of Rocca Calascio, that of Castel del Monte and Castelvecchio Calvisio. The watchtower was used to control traffic on the sheep track to Foggia and to alert the population during enemy invasions of the territory. In the sixteenth century, when Costanza Piccolomini sold the barony of Carapelle to Duke Francesco de 'Medici, the already developing town was adorned with the unmistakable Florentine Renaissance style, of which the main tower is the main element.
In the nineteenth century, with the unification of Italy and the privatization of the lands of the Tavoliere delle Puglie, the millennial activity of transhumance ended and the village began a process of decline which saw the population greatly reduced due to the phenomenon of emigration. In the 21st century the ancient village is having a rebirth, thanks to tourism, encouraged by the policy of the mayors who have followed one another, thanks to the will of the few remaining young people who, voluntarily, have given their contribution to the pro-loco since the end of the years sixty to date and thanks to the first investments of the residents.
