The first mill in Düppel was built of wood in 1744. After it burned down as a result of a lightning strike in 1800, it was rebuilt for the first time. During the Schleswig-Holstein War from 1848 to 1851 and the German-Danish War of 1864, the mill was destroyed in April 1849 and April 1864 because of its location in the center of the fighting, but was rebuilt after both wars. In the war of 1864, the Danish military transmitted messages to the troops stationed on the island of Alsen through the position of the mill wings (Wikipedia).

How can I reach Dybbøl Mølle using public transport from Sønderborg?

Dybbøl Mølle is located approximately 2.5 kilometers west of Sønderborg. While a pleasant 40-minute uphill walk or bike ride from the city center is a popular option, local bus services also connect Sønderborg to the Dybbøl area. Visitors should check local bus schedules for the most current routes and times.

What specific role did Dybbøl Mølle play during the 1864 war?

During the Second Schleswig War in 1864, Dybbøl Mølle served a critical strategic function for the Danish military. It was used as an observation and signal post, with the position of its wings reportedly used to transmit messages to troops stationed on the island of Als. Its prominent location on Dybbøl Banke made it a repeated target for bombardment.

How many times has Dybbøl Mølle been destroyed and rebuilt throughout its history?

Dybbøl Mølle has a remarkable history of resilience, having been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times. The first wooden mill burned down in 1800. Is Dybbøl Mølle wheelchair accessible, particularly the museum interior and viewpoints?
