During the Second World War, the U 995 submarine was used by the German Navy. Since 1943 it was mainly used for attacks on enemies in the North Sea. The submarine was involved in the sinking of a destroyer and several freighters. Several times in its missions it narrowly escaped its own sinking. It is one of the few Type VII-C / 41 submarines that survived the war. U-boat U 995 came to a Trondheim shipyard for a general overhaul. After the end of World War II, it first fell to Great Britain as spoils of war. However, the British left it in Trondheim and did not destroy it. It was later left to the Norwegians for testing and training purposes. In 1965 it was returned to Germany for a symbolic price of DM 1. Since 1972 the submarine U 995 has been lying on the beach in the immediate vicinity of the Naval Memorial and serves as a technical museum. It can be viewed both from the outside and inside and is intended to show those interested how cruel and cramping the life of the marines was in such a submarine during World War II.
