There is not much meaningful information about the oldest period of Šempeter church history. Basically, Christianity spread to our region from Ogle. Since 811, the vast area south of the Drava definitely belonged to the ecclesiastical authority (metropolis) of Ogle, and the Patriarch of Ogle was the chief shepherd of our ancestors for many centuries. After the destructive Hungarian invasions in the first half of the 10th century, the Church of Ogle actively participated in the restoration and ensured the establishment of an ecclesiastical organization based on (pre-)parishes. These were very large at the time. Even if Šempeter did not have the role of a parish-friendly church center, it had to get a sacral center early on. The very first known mention of the place - (de/in) sancto Petro - is indirect evidence of the existence of a church in this place, dedicated to the champion of the apostles.

An imposing brick church. The church has a small forecourt, with speed bumps for traffic to drive slowly across the forecourt. Restaurants are located opposite the church.
