Trendelburg Castle was built in the 13th century (copy from "Liber vitae", Corvey Monastery, in the Münster State Archives) in the border area on the Diemel River - here there was a ford where important trade routes crossed - between the bishoprics of Paderborn, Mainz and the emerging Landgraviate of Hesse. The builder was Konrad III of Schöneberg (1249-1311). The court was located at the linden tree in front of the castle. Separated by the moat, a small settlement was built in front of the castle on the ridge, which had two gates and was surrounded by a city wall. Older villages in the valley (Trende, Sulten, Exen) were gradually abandoned and left in favor of the fortified Trendelburg.

Trendelburg lies between the towns of Hofgeismar in the south and Bad Karlshafen in the north. It is crossed by the Weser tributary Diemel and is located directly west of the Reinhardswald.
