The chapel on the Schmittenhöhe was built in honor of Empress Elisabeth of Austria. The chapel was built between 1904 and 1905 under the most difficult conditions and was inaugurated in 1908 on the tenth anniversary of the Empress's death. Empress Sissi is said to have climbed the Schmittenhöhe on foot and marveled at the beauty of the impressive Alpine panorama at the spot where the chapel is located.
The Elisabeth Chapel was built in the years 1904/05 by Carl and Emilie Haschke and patrons according to the plans of the architect Josef Wessiken from Salzburg. Under the direction of master builder Jakob Menis, carpenter Straßgschwandtner and master mason Herzog (all from Zell am See) built the Sisi Chapel.
