The Bockwindmühle, built in 1626 in the glory of Dornum.
According to a map of Ubbo Emmius, there were 53 mills in East Frisia in 1590. (Attachment 1) There was no mill in Dornum at the time. From the few documents from this period to the beginning of the 18th century, there was initially only a windmill in this region as a type of mill. From the middle of the 18th century, the windmill was displaced by the Dutch windmill.
The Dornumer Bockwindmühle is mentioned in 1754 for the first time in the collection of East Frisian mills. For a total of 100 mills, two mills are named for Dornum. A Peldemühle, probably the mill on the site of the former Westerburg, which was built in 1719, and a rye mill for coarse flour, located on the eastern outskirts Bockwindmühle.
The name of the first miller should have been Freek Altmann.

Post windmills (also known as column mills) are among the oldest windmill types in Europe. It is characteristic that mill house and wings are erected on a supporting post (the so-called "house tree"), which stands as a vertical axis in a supporting structure (the "Bock"). Around this vertical axis, the entire mill machinery can be turned into the wind by means of an external beam.

The Dornumer Bockwindmühle dates back to 1626. This number is located as an inscription in the house tree. It is also assumed that parts of an older wind turbine were used during construction. The mill is considered the oldest surviving windmill in East Frisia.

At the entrance to Dornum is the last East Frisian post mill, which has been a landmark of the town since 1626. Massive oak beams and massive millstones have survived the turmoil of the centuries. Masterful craftsmanship allowed the mill to survive destructive storm surges, wind and weather.
