Very unhappily advertised on the street by absolutely inadequate advertising boards, there is a real treasure of East Frisian monastery and church history here. In the information building next to the chapel, not only interesting facts are served, but also coffee, tea and cake.

Next to the entrance to the chapel is a hagioscope. I had never heard of this myself. A hagioscope is a cross-shaped opening in the wall that allows hermits or those excluded from the service due to illness to still be able to see the altar and take part in the service.

Quote “In the 12th century, also in the course of great epidemics, there was a need to provide spiritual care for larger numbers of lepers who had to live apart from the church. The Third Lateran Council of 1179 allowed these sick people to form their own communities with their own priests, their own churches and their own cemeteries, but this was not always possible in rural areas. Hagioscopes are therefore mostly found in areas that were sparsely populated in the Middle Ages, and rarely in the churches of larger medieval towns, where lepers were often accommodated in leprosoria (leprosy houses) that had their own chapels.”

The Johanniterkapelle from the 13th century in Bokelesch is the last remaining Catholic monastery building on East Frisian soil and in so far it is unique. As the chapel of the once very strong and widespread Coming of the Johanniter. On weekends and some public holidays you can also have coffee and cake inside and outside in the adjoining farm garden for a small fee in the adjoining community building.

The Johanniter Commandery Bokelesch is a former Johanniter Commandery. The monastery was in Bokelesch/Strücklingen on the Sagter Ems, a district of today's Saterland municipality in the Cloppenburg district in Lower Saxony. From her the monastery chapel has been preserved.
The founding year of the monastery is unknown. The monastery was probably founded around the middle of the 13th century as a double monastery by Johanniter from Burgsteinfurt. The monastery was first mentioned in a document, the so-called Groninger Settlement, from 1319.
