Ponzano Romano is a town of about 1000 inhabitants located in the Tiber valley, whose origin seems to be connected to the river. The historic center of Ponzano Romano was built on a river terrace, while the surrounding area is flat to the east and hilly to the west.

It seems that its origin is precisely connected to the river. According to some, the name of the town derives from "pons Jani", bridge of Janus or perhaps from the "gens Pontia", a Roman family that owns a villa and land in the area.
Starting from the eighth century we find the Benedictines settled in the Abbey of S. Andrea in flumine, who took possession of the Ponzano "fundus" in the mid-eleventh century. If the first news of Ponzano dates back to the eighth century, a time when this locality belonged to the Abbey of Farfa, again through historical sources, the primitive residential nucleus was already established before the end of the thirteenth century.
However, inside the village the most ancient monumental traces do not date back to the 14th century, while some of them allow a glimpse of a defensive system of fortified houses arranged to close the town. In fact, it is possible to identify the original village of Ponzano, in the Etruscan period, as an area with inhabited centers placed to control, on the right bank, the activity on the river acquired as a border line with the Sabines settled on the left bank.
