The castle was probably built in the first half of the 13th century, possibly by the noble lords of Twiel. It is mentioned in 1250 in the possession of the Lords of Rosenegg and in 1335 came into the possession of the Lords of Lupfen. After the castle was destroyed in the Swiss War in 1499, after reconstruction and the extinction of those of Lupfen in 1610, it went to the Constance Monastery. In 1617 the castle was expanded into a secondary residence and the residential buildings were increased.
In 1632 the castle was occupied by Württemberg troops and in 1639 it was destroyed by Hohentwiel troops. The castle ruins were demolished at the end of the 17th century. From the former castle complex, which had a keep with a base area of 6.5 by 6.5 meters and a wall thickness of 1.5 meters, extensive remains of walls have been preserved.
