This bronze sculpture of a fish figure in the market place of the sculptor Waldemar Nottbohm from Pussade was inaugurated in 1986. The background for this sculpture is a legend: It is said that Heinrich von Braunschweig had Dutch dike builders ordered to Hitzacker because of the recurrent floods in order to build a dike around the city island. At that time, there were mermaids and other creatures driven out of the city by this dyke. This angered the big butt (De grode Butt): the mythical creature destroyed the dike, flooded land, drowned people and destroyed dikes and boats. To reconcile the river dwellers, people sacrificed.
On the bronze sculpture is a plaque on the saying: "Think of the Elbe and the fish". It should be understood as a silent reminder. Butt is a symbol of nature, the environment and life.

Here, the German Fachwerkstraße takes its course. De Grode Butt bubbles in the middle of the historic city center. The picturesque facades of the lovingly tended half-timbered houses are located in small streets. They end at the Jeetzelufer or in the wide landscape of the big river, the Elbe. The vineyard is a place to dream. Hitzacker is a cultural town that makes you longing.
