The information about JR56’s planned “Gorleben nuclear waste storage facility” is not up to date. Therefore an addition at this point:

After 43 years (!) of resistance, “cross-generational, colorful, undaunted, cheeky” and with a lot of “stamina”, it has been clear since September 28, 2020 that the salt dome in Wendland is unsuitable as a final storage site for highly radioactive nuclear waste. This is not a political decision, but a geoscientific decision. And as with the topic of pandemics, which virologists have so much to tell us these days, in this case the geologists investigated and spoke plainly. And the resistance celebrates! Rightly so. Nice area for walks, cycling or taking photos. I love to go there again and again, mostly by bike and my photo equipment. There are also many species of birds to be seen on the Elbe. In addition to songbirds, you can also observe sea eagles, cranes, gray and great egrets, red and black kites, buzzards, etc. At night you can take pictures of the starry sky in the area. Since there are no large cities nearby, light pollution is very low in the area.

This section of the cycle path that has been marked here is not really a highlight, because the path that runs the entire way along a busy road (the L256) has been marked here.

Approximately 100m away, parallel to it, there is a much nicer alternative route, directly along the Elbe dyke (the path runs from the end of the village of Laase to just before Gorleben, directly along the Elbe dyke).

The path along the Elbe dyke is wider, much easier to ride and much more scenic than the narrow and, in bad weather, often slippery cycle path along the L256. There is also a narrow, paved path directly on the dyke, although it is very bumpy, not a problem with a mountain bike, but with a racing bike I would recommend the path next to the dyke.
