Mayor donates and plants a whitebeam

Today, Mayor Knut Kreuch planted a personally donated whitebeam, the "Tree of the Year 2024", in the Bürgerpark on Rudloffstrasse.

The real or common whitebeam - as it is officially called - grows to a height of 12 to 15 meters and can reach an age of 150 - 200 years. It is already noticeable in early spring when its large buds open and the shoots, leaves and flower buds, completely covered in dense silver-gray hair, become visible. This hair then gradually disappears, but remains on the flower stems or later fruit stems and especially on the undersides of the leaves as protection against evaporation until autumn. In summer, it is easy to recognize even from a distance by the silvery shimmering treetop. From mid-May, the Whitebeam with white, slightly cream-colored flowers in umbel-like clusters.
