Hydropower was the most important energy in the early industrial age. It was used to drive textile machines as well as hammer mills for metal processing. The mill in Wulfsen south of Winsen (Luhe) also served several productions: flour and meal were milled, pearl barley and groats were peeled, oil was beaten, tan was mashed and felt was punched.
In Wulfsen the mill, the sawmill and the miller's house form a typical building ensemble of northern Lower Saxony from the 19th century. Presumably there has been a watermill here since the 13th century. However, the current mill building on the Au, which is dammed into a mill pond, dates from 1856. Its elaborate construction and the miller's residential house testify to the prosperity of the time. In 1895, a sawmill was added to the business in a simple, purpose-built building. Both the sawmill and the mill in Wulfsen were powered by hydropower.
For the miller, this combination of grain mill and sawmill increased economic security: by operating the saw gate, he bridged idle times in the mill. He continued to modernize his business: in 1909 he replaced the waterwheel with a turbine, from 1920 to 1939 he also used it to generate electricity for his business and the neighborhood. Operations ceased in the 1960s, but the sawmill was retained.
