The Gacholle lighthouse is located in the Camargue (Bouches-du-Rhône), on the dike between Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer and Salin-de-Giraud, surrounded by the lagoons Étang de la Dame, Tampan, and Galabert. It was built in 1882, to facilitate access to the Beauduc anchorage - the only shelter protected from the east wind - and to avoid the dangerous Pointe de Sablon. The square masonry tower is 18 meters in height. The light, replaced with a solar 40W system, uses a "rotating machine" with motor weight and wing regulator. Operation started in 1884. The simple 2-story building for the two lightkeepers now houses a small, free natural science museum, and has a picnic area in the courtyard.
