The old town of Schongau is located on the former Umlaufberg of the Lech. With its elevated location, its closedness, the large number of historical buildings and the preserved city wall ring, it almost embodies the ideal type of the medieval mountain town. In the Middle Ages it was an important hub and trading center on the Verona-Augsburg-Nuremberg transport line and on the salt route from Berchtesgadener Land to Allgäu. On a tour of the old town you can see many historical buildings such as the mint building, the Maxtor and the well-preserved city wall with towers and battlements.
