The Werbeliner See is an approximately 450-hectare opencast mine residue lake that was created by flooding from the former Delitzsch-Südwest opencast mine. The lake is located in the Saxon Lake District, south of the city of Delitzsch and north of Leipzig.

In 1975, brown coal mining began in the area of today's Werbeliner Lake. In the period that followed, the towns of Kattersnaundorf, Grabschütz and Werbelin (formerly Rundling) had to give way. There is a memorial stone at Werbelin's former location. The coal was transported on a specially built railway line to Bitterfeld and from there to the energy production and chemical industries. The Werbeliner See emerged from the main remaining hole of the Delitzsch-Südwest opencast mine, which was closed in 1993, and was flooded from the Neue Luppe from 1998 to 2010. In March 2004, according to the LMBV, it was 87% full. The area is being recultivated.
