Sinis is the area northwest of Oristano between Santa Caterina di Pittinuri, Cuglieri, Monte Ferru, Riola, Cabras and the sea.
The coastline alternates between limestone cliffs of Capo Mannu and Capo San Marco and the low, sandy shores such as at sa Mesa Longa, Pallosu, Is Arutas and s'Arena Scoada, with crystal-clear turquoise waters and beaches of a dazzling white due to the sand rich in quartz grains.
Offshore, facing the coast of Cabras, lies the uninhabited Island of Mal di Ventre, while a few miles further south lies the Scoglio del Catalano; but the main feature is the presence of a series of coastal ponds and saline, that contribute to biodiversity and represent the best habitat for many species of birds, both migratory and resident, among which there are the purple gallinule Western Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio), the Pink Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus), Black-Winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus), the Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), the Gray Heron (Ardea cinerea), the Yellow-Legged Gull (Larus michahellis) and many other species.
The vegetation in the more arid areas is characterized by Mediterranean scrub: wild olive-tree (Olea europaea sylvestris), Lentisk (Pistacia lentiscus), Arbutus (Arbutus Unedo), Myrtle (Myrtus communis) and Salvia Cistus (Cistus salvifolius); while, in the wetlands, it is made up of Willows (Salix fragilis), White Poplars (Populus alba) and Tamarisk (Tamarix gallica).
Finally Sinis is rich in sites of great archaeological and historical-cultural interest: the hypogeum of S. Salvatore, over 70 nuraghes including the S'Urachi one, the ancient site of Mont'e Prama’s Giants, the Phoenician-Punic city of Tharros, the early Christian church of San Giovanni di Sinis, the Spanish Tower of San Giovanni…

      Saint Savior of Sinis
In reality, nothing you see justifies thinking of it as a fishing village; all the typical elements are missing: proximity to the sea, boats and nets under repair, people, liveliness of sounds and colours...
Yet it is a fascinating place precisely because of its extreme poverty and conciseness, a mix between a Western movie set, Ghost Town, an example of urban archaeology, a place of worship and ancient popular traditions, a prehistoric sanctuary...
To be visited, possibly in the early hours of the morning or late in the evening or even in the sunniest and most deserted hours of certain summer days dominated by heat, silence, human absence, the creak of one's footsteps and a surreal sense of elsewhere.

The picturesque hamlet of San Salvatore di Sinis, located a short distance from the Cabras pond, looks like an old uninhabited village.
But actually it originated around the namesake rural church: on the occasion of novenaries (9-day religious ceremonies) hundreds of pilgrims from the surrounding region gathered there to celebrate San Salvatore.
So dozens and dozens of "cumbessias" (small temporary lodgings made up of one single room) were built around the church to accommodate pilgrims; once the novenaries ended, the pilgrims left and the cumbessias became empty again.
Over time, some of these little houses changed into private structures, but still today, between the end of August and the beginning of September, the village is repopulated for the feast of the patron, when the "Corsa degli Scalzi" takes place. This is a procession undertaken by hundreds of men from Cabras to San Salvatore - running barefoot and carrying a statue.
The church dates back to the Middle Ages, but the place was sacred since prehistoric age: just under the building there is a subterranean space of 5 rooms around a central circular room where is the sacred Nuragic well. Here it was celebrated the worship of waters that were considered curative since the Neolithic.
The hypogeum - attended since the Nuragic times and then remodeled in the late Roman period (III-IV century AD) - contains drawings and inscriptions in Punic, Greek, Latin and even Arabic characters, to witness a continuum of religiosity.
A curiosity: the village was used as a movie set for some "Spaghetti Westerns" in the 60s and 70s.

The village is at the first km coming from Cabras to the North, along the s.p. 7.
