The hypogeic necropolis of Su Crucifissu Mannu is an archaeological site between Sassari and Porto Torres, in northwestern Sardinia, a region rich in prehistoric monuments, dolmens, menhirs and nuraghi.
It is dug into a horizontal limestone layer and includes at least twenty-two "domus de janas", all constructed in the period between the Neolithic New (IV millennium BC) and the Initial Eneolithic (III millennium BC). The name Domus de Janas (literally “Fairies’ Houses”) is due to the fact that, in the past, these tombs were believed to be the homes of fantastic creatures.
The graves are all multi-cellular, that is, they are made up of several spaces, connecting each other.
They can be accessed either through a vertical pit or through a “dromos”, a horizontal descending corridor. Some smaller cells face the walls of the large main room, which, in some hypogea, is provided with a central pillar.
Some rooms are adorned with the symbolic or architectural elements (taurine protomes variously stylized or steps, outlined doors, architraves) typical of the period, carved in bas-relief in the rock.
The site does not have fences and is free of charge.
