The baroque castle of San Martino Alfieri was built starting from 1696 by the architect Bertola as a summer residence of the Alfieri family, on the previous ruins of a medieval fortress that belonged to the Solaro di Govone family. In front of the residence the Orangerie was then built, the family's winter garden, decorated by Comacine masters with delicate stuccoes.

Alfieri di Sostegno estate and castle in San Martino
From the 14th century, the territory of San Martino Alfieri belonged to the Solaro family, nobles from Asti of primary importance and lords of nearby Govone. Their rule was undisputed under the passage of the Marquis of Monferrato, the Visconti and the Orléans, but ended in 1615, by order of Carlo Emanuele I of Savoy, when the place passed to the Alfieri di Magliano.
