The origin and development of the city is closely linked to the fate of the Benedictine monastery. According to legend, the monastery was founded in 734 by Benedictine monks (saint Pirmin, saint Amor). It was only mentioned in a document 100 years later. The settlement development at this point was favored by the crossing of two old long-distance trade routes on the Mud: from west to east: Worms-Middle Franconia; from north to south: Main-Neckar (Miltenberg-Heilbronn) and the sheltered location in the Mud valley.
