    A very nice bike ride along the unique sand drift Beekhuizerzand. Various picnic spots and beautiful views. Varied landscape with dry forests with Scots pine and wetter parts with old beeches.

        Before 1830, the Beekhuizerzand was part of a large quicksand area. Between 1880 and 1930, it was planted with pine trees on a large scale, especially to prevent dusting. It was also used as a military training area and opened for recreation from 1963. In 2004, many fly pines were felled and the top layer removed from the ground, so that it has become a real quicksand area where the destructible sand has been released again. The area is grazed by sheep.

                    From this dune you have a beautiful view of the entire Buikhuizerzand. Especially in the morning or evening sun you can see the impressive spectacle of shadow and light on the thumbs. The Beekhuizerzand is a drifting sand area measuring approximately 200 hectares. The area was reduced from a forest area to a real drifting sand area in 2004. For this purpose, many fly pine trees have been cut down and the top layer of the soil has been removed, so that the driftable sand is exposed again.

                    Shifting sands are unique natural landscapes in Western Europe, the vast majority of which are located in the Netherlands. They have their own flora and fauna. Typical plants and animals for drifting sands are lichens and sand lizards. But also the rare dune pipit, nightjar and the slightly more common skylark and crested lark are animals that you can observe on and around the drifting sand.

                          Beekhuizerzand is a shifting sand area and is one of the unique natural landscapes in Western Europe, most of which is located in the Netherlands.
                          We visited the Kootwijkerzand a few days ago. This sandy area is characterized by striking differences in altitude and offers many beautiful viewpoints.
                          What is surprising is that you can be in Harderwijk in just a few minutes.
