Friederikensiel was created in 1721 when the Friederikengroden was dyed in the Harle Bay area. The place and the Groden of the same name are named after Friederike, wife of Prince Johann August zu Anhalt-Zerbst.
In addition to the sewer, a U-shaped niche was built in the dike line for an external harbor basin. So the water of the deep lying behind the sluice was dammed up and when the tide was running down the sluice gates were opened so that the dammed water flowed out through the harbor basin.
Efforts by the Zerbst rule to establish a trading port in Friederikensiel, however, showed little success. The Sielhafen was abandoned in the middle of the 18th century.

Thanks for the tip about the dike smokehouse. We would have liked to have enjoyed a fish sandwich there, but unfortunately the shop is only open Mon-Sat until 3 p.m., please note!🙁
The pancake house is completely closed until further notice.🤷‍♀️

On the Sielmauer a table is mounted with information, next to it is a nicely designed rest area with flood and storm tide marks. Refreshments are available in front of and behind the Sieltor: the dike smokehouse and the pancake house
