The Oldenburg lock limits the apex position of the coastal canal to the east. In the underwater, the Hunte, which is navigable from here and influenced by the tide, joins the coastal canal up to the entrance to the old port of Oldenburg, which connects the Weser at Elsfleth via the lower Hunte with the Ems, which has been expanded to form the Dortmund-Ems Canal.

The lock, which consists of one chamber, was built from 1922 to 1928. It is 105 meters long and 12 meters wide. The height difference that is overcome with the lock depends on the water level in the Hunte. At low tide it is about 5.40 meters. The lock is fed with water from the coastal channel. Between 3,700 m³ and 7,000 m³ of water are required for a lock (data refer to high and low tide water). The water is diverted into the underwater.
