    Breuberg Castle - Odenwald 🚴‍♂️

    Breuberg Castle in the Odenwald, with its over 850-year history, is one of the largest and best-preserved castles in all of southern Germany.

    Constructed of red sandstone, the castle rises on a hilltop surrounded by the Mümling River. It was built around 1200 by the Reiz von Lützelbach at the behest of Fulda Abbey to secure the Odenwald possessions. With the almost sacred Romanesque portal to the inner castle and the mighty keep made of bossed ashlars, it still displays high-quality architectural features from the Hohenstaufen period. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the castle was significantly expanded and its defenses upgraded, as evidenced by the mighty moat and gun turrets.

    The fact that the castle has always been inhabited explains why the entire complex is still in such good condition today. Over the centuries, it has served a variety of purposes. It has served as a bailiwick castle, the residence of counts and princely families, but also as a district office, a camp for foreign workers during World War II, and even the headquarters of a toy factory. Each era has left its mark. Today, the castle houses one of the most beautiful youth hostels, a restaurant, and the Breuberg Museum. 🚴‍♂️🚴‍♂️

      The western driveway of Hainstadt is particularly recommended. It leads past the Wölferhof before it meets the Neustadt driveway at the parking lot.
      The last part of this driveway is quite crisp 🚴👍
