By generating 100% hydropower, the Melk power plant makes an important contribution to preserving the ecological conditions in the region. The bird sanctuary and the gravel islands in the oxbow lake are a valuable refuge for waterfowl and also attract passing cyclists. A recreational paradise and a new recreational area have thus been created around the oxbow lake.
