    The Royal Saxon triangulation (here with the historical proper name) is a carried out in the years 1862 to 1890 on the territory of the Kingdom of Saxony surveying with simultaneous creation of a trigonometric network. The aim was to record the national territory in a scientific-geodetic manner and to create the basis for the production of precise map works by establishing permanently marketable fixed points. As a basis of scale, the Großenhainer baseline was determined.

            The 133.6 meter high Wachberg is a natural elevation in the district of Rückmarsdorf (southeast of the old town centre). It is part of the Dehlitz-rückmarsdorf terminal moraine and forms the highest natural point in the west of Leipzig.
            Originally the hill was called Ricmersberg. During the Thirty Years' War it was given the name "Wachberg" because of its function as a vantage point with a remarkable view.
            On May 2, 1813, a battle between the Prussian troops of General F. Kleist (1763–1823) and a French unit1) took place on the Wachberg. In 1836 a Dutch windmill was built on the Wachberg, which operated until it was demolished in 1930.
            In 1865, the Royal Saxon Triangulation placed a topographical point on the Wachberg. The 23 meter high water tower Rückmarsdorf has been on the Wachberg since 1915.
            In 1988, a memorial stone was dedicated to commemorate the battle of May 2, 1813, which is based on the Apelsteinen in shape and design.
