The Pilat dune is the highest in Europe. Despite its size, it is fragile. The climb is worth it! The bravest don't take the stairs: the sand will heat up your thighs and calves! The view at its top is breathtaking.

If feels safer to continue past the visitors center, particularly after it closes in the afternoon, and lock the bike at the end of the gravel trail where it becomes too sandy, near the foot of the stairs, so you can see your bike and gear while you walk up the tallest European dune.

Besides a good indoor and outdoor information display, there are restrooms, drinking water fountains, and fast food outlets. Officially bikes cannot continue on the trail to the dunes, but if you cannot find a trustworthy staff here to watch your bike or at least the bags it might be safer to keep going as far as possible to the dunes, where the soft sand makes it hard for any thieves to stage a quick escape.
