The Margravial Opera House in Bayreuth, a unique monument to the festival and musical culture of the 18th century, was entered into the UNESCO list of world cultural heritage in 2012 and in 2014 was chosen for the first time on the list of TOP 100 sights in Germany.
The Margravial Opera House, one of the most beautiful baroque theaters in Europe, still bears witness to the life and work as well as the artistic inclinations of Margravine Wilhelmine. The Prussian princess and favorite sister of Frederick the Great, one of the most important women in Germany in the 18th century, turned the royal seat of Bayreuth into a radiant cultural metropolis. Her favorite project and at the same time the most magnificent venue was the Margravial Opera House.

The Margravial Opera House in the Upper Franconian city of Bayreuth is a theater building from the 18th century. Since Bayreuth had become an insignificant provincial town after the margravial period towards the end of the 18th century, the building was able to survive the following period as good as unchanged. Thanks to the artistic quality and the state of preservation, the Margravial Opera House is one of the two most important theater buildings built before the French Revolution that has been preserved, along with the Teatro Olimpico. On June 30, 2012, UNESCO declared the baroque building a World Heritage Site.
In Bayreuth it is only called the “opera house”, whereas the opera house built by Richard Wagner is called the “festival hall”. After the principality of Bayreuth was sold to the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1810, the building was called the “Royal Opera House”.
