The dyke owes its name to the notorious pirate Klaus Störtebeker, who made the North Sea unsafe in the 14th century. He found shelter in front of his pursuers, among other things in the municipality Marienhafe, which is located about 15 km from Greetsiel.

The path along the Störtebekerdeich is the ideal cycling route. Absolutely smooth paved and wide enough to accommodate the many cyclists in the season. It's even nicer with a tailwind Rücken

A very nice stretch of route with a perfect surface for cycling with beautiful views of the hinterland and some vantage points on the top of the dike over to the Wadden Sea.
