The Millennium Bridge was given its name in 1929 when the new bridge was inaugurated on the occasion of the city's 1000th anniversary.
The Long Bridge was the first direct connection between the old town and the new town. The first wooden bridge structure was built around 1230/1240 and had to be renewed several times.

The "millennium bridge" should also have symbolic meaning. She should help the people from the two districts to get closer and promote the unification of the whole city through better understanding. The old and the new time should meet through the new bridge construction.
In 1945 the millennium bridge was blown up and rebuilt in 1946/47. In July 1993, the bridge had to be closed to vehicles again for safety reasons. The Millennium Bridge was demolished and rebuilt in 1995/96.
The sophisticatedly designed bridge was inaugurated on December 4th, 1996.
