The Desembarco del Granma National Park was added to the World Heritage List of UNESCO in 1999 as a globally representative example of geomorphological and physiographic phenomena (landscape and natural space).
Here on December 2, 1956, the landing of the revolutionaries around Fidel Castro with the yacht Granma took place and ushered in the revolution in Cuba. The name of the national park reminds of this event: Desembarco del Granma = Granma landing.
