          At the confluence of the Maas and Waal between 1357 and 1368 Castle Loevenstein was built. The castle became famous mainly when it was converted into an official state prison at the beginning of the 17th century - and the scene of perhaps the most spectacular prison eruption in Dutch history.

          The political philosopher Hugo de Groot succeeded in 1621 escape from captivity for life. De Groot was granted the privilege of having books sent to him and giving them back. One day his wife hid him in an empty bookcase. Disguised as a stack of theological books de Groot was so smuggled out of prison and escaped to France. Conclusion: reading makes you smart!

          Today, Loevenstein Castle houses an interesting medieval museum.

              Loevestein Castle is located where the Maas and Waal meet and Gelderland, Brabant and South Holland meet. Knight Dirc Loef van Horne chose this location almost six centuries ago because of its strategic location. Before Loevestein belonged to the Dutch Waterline, the castle served as a state prison where lawyer and writer Hugo de Groot, among others, was held. He managed to escape in a book chest in 1621.

                    Loevestein Castle is located in a unique place, where the Maas and the Waal meet. It is situated in the Fortress Triangle, between the historic cities of Gorinchem, Woudrichem and Zaltbommel and forms a hub of culture and nature. Loevestein is located on the border of three provinces - Gelderland, Noord-Brabant and Zuid-Holland - and is part of the municipality of Zaltbommel. A special region where a lot of culture, fortifications and centuries-old stories can be found.
