Grand Bassin is considered the holiest place of pilgrimage of Hindus in Mauritius. At the entrance is located since 2007, a 33 m high Shiva statue. This is the tallest statue of Mauritius.
On the other side of the street another 33 m high statue is under construction, which will show Durga Maa Bhavani.
It is said that Shiva and his wife Parvati once circled the earth while Shiva balanced the holy river Ganges on his head. On his landing, Shiva spilled a few drops of the aisle, from which the Ganga Talao lake was formed. Shiva foretold that one day the people of India would come to the island of Mauritius and visit the lake as a holy place.
In 1972, holy waters of the Ganges were mixed with the waters of the lake to create a symbolic link with the sacred Indian River. In addition, the lake was renamed Grand Bassin in Ganga Talao.
