Died here on August 17th, 1466, right here! Hinrik Pomert😔 When we have found our way here, let us remember his and his bereaved relatives, as the Latin inscription suggests.

The small branch that leads from the trail to this memorable site is peppered with transverse trees so that it was not drivable for me. Next time I would probably do the last few meters without a bike.

The Pomertstein south of the Lüdersdorf district of Herrnburg is one of the late Gothic monuments in the Nordwestmecklenburg district. Possibly as an expiatory stone, the medieval stone cheek still commemorates the traveler who died here.
The stone is located south of Herrnburg in the forest on the right of the road to Schattin, the medieval pilgrimage route from Lübeck to Wilsnack. It is made of Gotland limestone and worked as a relief on the side facing the street. The picture shows a crucifixion scene. Under the cross on the left, Hinrich Pomert, who died here on August 17, 1466, represented as a traveler or pilgrim through his travel bag. In addition, presumably in the dress of a dean, his son, the Hamburg cathedral dean Pomert, who, according to the inscription, donated the plaque to his father, who died here. The details of the death have not been preserved, not even by local legend. Below the picture is the explanatory Latin text in Gothic minuscule:

"Anno domini 1466 the xvii augusti obiit hic hinric pomert dum peregre vadit. Reminiscere obiter relictorum suique suorum. Huic dicavit hoc filius decanus hamburgensis. Memores estote suarum precor, animarum. "

If you drive the street from Lübeck towards Schattin or Lenschow, you will find a sand parking lot on the right-hand side just after Herrnburg, in the first curve. From here, a forest nature trail leads past the Pomertstein.

Size / Material: 267: 68: 15 / Gotland limestone

History: the back is smooth. The Pomertstein is a so-called atonement stone, also known as a murder cheek.
This stone has a horseshoe-shaped top with seven circular knobs. In it - and going over to the stele - a relief-like crucifix is depicted, at the foot of which two praying figures kneel. On the left, the deceased can be recognized as a traveler with a bag around him; the other figure, probably his son, is dressed in a dean's costume. Under the cross is a coat of arms with a heraldic line pierced by the sword. At the bottom is a seven-line inscription in Gothic minuscule (lower case). It is:
Anno domini 1466 the xvii augusti
obiit hic hinric pomert dum peregre
vadit. Reminiscere obiter relictorum
suique suorum. Huic dicavit hoc filius
decanus hamburgensis. Memores
estote suarum precor, animarum.

The stone therefore reminds us that the Hamburg cathedral sample Hinrich Pomert had the crossroads built in 1466 for the father of the same name who had died there. The cross lies on an old pilgrimage route that led in the 15th century via Lübeck to Bad Wilsnack in the Prignitz. There the miracles of the Holy Blood were venerated.
Exploring Herrnburg was impossible in the GDR era, because it was located directly in the death zone. The crooked stele could therefore only be erected again in 1994.
