The ruins on the western spur of Gilserberg Castle Hill (419 meters) were once a Romanesque hilltop castle. Likely built as early as the 12th century, it was first documented around 1350.
After a turbulent history, the castle gradually fell into disrepair from 1557 onwards. Records from 1601 show that residents of Schönau assured the Landgrave that they had certainly not used any of the castle's stones for their own houses, but only for the construction of Ziegenhain Fortress.
Today, the ruins are a popular hiking destination, perfect for a short break.
