In pre-Christian times there was a grotto here, which the settlers around Kollbrunn and Zell probably used as a pagan spring sanctuary (Chilen) and was later, like many un-Christian things, denigrated as the work of the devil (Tüfels). In the 19th century, two quarries were used in the municipality of Zell. Tuff stone was mined in two quarries using stone saws. The tuff stones were used within the municipality for roads or for building factories. The quarry was closed in 1873 and since then nature has been reclaiming what the tuff mining took from it.
