The third largest shallow lake in Schleswig-Holstein used to be between Oldenburg in Holstein and the municipality of Grube. Due to the sand ingress from the nearby Baltic Sea, it became more and more silted up and was gradually drained in order to gain land for agriculture. The Flensburg sculptor Johannes Caspersen commemorates the history of the lake with his two "regular guests" on Paasch-Eyler-Platz. The relic of the last ice age was rich in fish and fed several families. This is what the "fisherman" stands for in the field by the sewer - at the time of the Gruber See, that was his area of work. The "Traveller" looks out over the landscape from the viewing platform on the grounds of the Old Gruber Citizens' Guild - and also at the "Fisherman". The figures thus become symbols of the originally natural environment and later human intervention. As a direct counterpart, the pair of sculptures made of painted oak logs address the pros and cons of change.
