The medieval Helfenberg Castle was first mentioned in a St. Gallen document at the beginning of the 14th century. As early as 1413, only a castle stable was mentioned, which suggests that the complex was no longer inhabitable or only partially inhabitable at that time.
The Archaeology Office of the Canton of Thurgau carried out a small excavation in the north-west corner of the building in 1980. A few pot shards and an oval bronze buckle were found under a thick layer of fire debris. It is interesting that some of these finds date back to around 1200. Helfenberg Castle
may therefore have been built more than 100 years before the first written mention in 1331.
