The monastery Zehdenick was founded in 1250 - according to legend, in memory of a miracle of the Host. The Cistercian Monastery quickly became a place of pilgrimage and a spiritual-cultural and economic center of the area.
During the Thirty Years' War, the monastery was heavily destroyed. In the city fire of 1801 almost all written documents of the monastery were destroyed. The monastery church burned down and was not rebuilt.
In 2015, the monastery garden was transformed into a meadow orchard based on a historical model. The historic monastery cemetery, which has been developed since 1910, was restored after a sensitive securing of the old substance and was officially opened in April 2018. The area of the former monastery church was also inaugurated as a place of worship with an impressive wall cross, altar and benches under the open sky. Here, from spring to autumn on Wednesday evening, prayers for the monks take place.

In the summer months, the picturesque monastery courtyard and the conventual interior hall in the north wing are used as backdrop for concerts and events of the Protestant Abbey. The monastery houses the Evangelische Familienberatung and offers apartments for families.
