I think the motif has something to do with the sunken steam locomotive. The locomotive built in Karlsruhe went overboard in 1852 during the transfer by ship during a storm.
This beautifully carved locomotive bears the name Rheingold and has nothing in common with the lock that is said to have sunk in front of the harbor basin!
