The Leine Descent Lock is located within the connecting canal from the Mittelland Canal to the Leine River; it allows access from the level of the MLK to the level of the dammed Leine. Today, the canal is used only by passenger ships and pleasure boats; it formerly served as a connection to the long-vanished factories at the level of today's Ihme Center.

The connecting canal to the Leine (VKL), formerly also known as the Leine connecting canal or Leine descent canal, connects the Mittelland Canal with the Leine. It is a federal waterway,[2] for which the Braunschweig Waterways and Shipping Authority is responsible. Unlike the other connecting canals of the Mittelland Canal (MLK), it does not branch off directly from the Mittelland Canal, but rather from the Hanover-Linden branch canal. Within the canal lies the Leine descent lock; it allows for the descent from the level of the MLK to the level of the dammed Leine. Today, the canal is used only by passenger ships and pleasure craft; formerly, it served as a connection to the long-vanished factories at the level of today's Ihme Center.
