"Oh, it's scary to walk across the moor ..." once wrote the writer Annette von Droste-Hülshoff in her poem "The Boy in the Moor". And although humans have pushed the moorland ever further back over the centuries, they have lost none of their fascination to this day.

On the border between Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein, Wittmoor is one of the few raised bogs in northern Germany. The almost eerie silence, the dark moor lake and the stumps of dead birch trees that protrude from the water provide a pleasant feeling of shiver while walking, especially on dim winter or autumn afternoons. Not only fearful minds involuntarily come to mind old scary stories about bog corpses and ghosts.

The Wittmoor offers the most impressive picture of a former raised bog in Hamburg. Many individual plant remains can be seen on the tapping edges of the mighty peat layers, which are up to three meters high.
For the botanist or forest scientist, the Wittmoor is a treasure trove for the documentation of the vegetation and forest history since the last ice age and also for the layperson an impressive illustration of the millennia-long history of the formation of this bog, which is a nature reserve on Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein areas .

The landscape is really great.
The paths are also good for cycling, but very narrow so that cyclists and pedestrians can get into the enclosure very easily.
