The 37m high lighthouse of Schiermonnikoog is called the north tower. The other tower is the former lighthouse, the south tower.
King Willem the 3rd gave the order in 1853 to build two towers on the island. These towers are a sign of orientation for shipping. When the lights of the two towers coincided, the boatmen knew that they could safely sail between the sandbanks from the North Sea to the Wadden Sea.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the red tower was given a rotating, mechanical light, making the white south tower (used for years as a water tower, now an antenna mast) superfluous.

The functioning lighthouse of Schiermonnikoog, not to be confused with that other white lighthouse that has not been in service as a lighthouse for many years. The lighthouse cannot be visited, but it is still impressive to visit. There is also a beach entrance and water point here.
