The hydropower plant from 1905 draws its water from the Urft Dam and was once the largest storage hydropower plant in Europe. The power plant building is now a listed building and can be viewed on guided tours.

The size of the power plant is truly striking. It was built in the Art Nouveau style and can be visited at the following times:
Groups: 15-40 people
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 10:00 a.m. or 2:00 p.m. (March - October)

Individual visitors: 10-40 people
Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. (March - October)

Closed on public holidays.

The power plant is still in operation today. The original equipment with eight Francis turbines, each driving its own 1.5 MW generator, was in operation for almost 70 years. The turbines were decommissioned in 1975 and replaced by two new, more efficient machines. Two of the old machines are still in place because the new generators take up much less space. Another is at the Moselle power plant in Fankel, one for demonstration purposes in the power plant in Weisweiler and one in Brauweiler. Since then, the plant has had an installed capacity of 16 MW to cover peak loads, mainly in operation in the morning hours of the weekdays. This requires up to 18 m³ of water per second. (For comparison: The most powerful wind turbine (as of 2017) is the MHI Vestas V164 with 9 megawatts of installed capacity.) When the dam is at its maximum height, the drop to the power plant is 110 m.
